S2D-Series Servo Drive

ServoWire S2D drives are available in two series, 200V and 400V. Fourteen models provide continuous output power ranging from 600 watts to 24 kilowatts. Output current ranges from 3 to 60 amps rms/phase. Up to 16 S2D drives can be interfaced to an SMLC controller using ServoWire protocol for motion control networking.

Overview

ServoWire S2D drives provide high performance servo operation using digital networking technology based on IEEE 1394b (FireWire). This network is high speed and easy to implement with cost-effective, industry-standard cabling. An S2D drive supports a wide variety of high performance servo motors. Consult ORMEC for OEM applications of user-supplied brushless rotary and linear motors, as well as DC brush-type and voice-coil motors. Reliable IGBT-based intelligent power modules provide cost effective solutions for motion control applications.

S2D drives operate on 24 VDC, 100-240 or 100-480 VAC input power and have output short-circuit and over-voltage protection. An all-digital design eliminates the troublesome analog interface between PC and drive systems, replacing it with a high-speed network based on the IEEE 1394b standard.

Performance

The all-digital S2D is a high performance drive. Fast update rates, high bandwidth control loops and high resolution motor feedback combine in a distributed control architecture. Quick and accurate torque, velocity, and position control are independent of the number of axes on the network.

A Realtime Hardware Counter provides critical timing functionality with no latency. It is used for mark width discrimination, position delay triggers, timing advance registration, backup compensation and other applications.

Programmable Drive Configuration

Factory adjustments are automatically calibrated and stored in Flash memory. All user configuration is done with the axis configuration tools in ServoWire Pro software. Motor types are selected from a database of ORMEC standard motors or are easily configured with the custom motor wizard. The wizard reads the required parameters directly from the motor. Configuration data, including motor parameters, all operational limits for torque and speed, I/O configurations, load inertia and servo loop tuning parameters, are stored in the SMLC.  This data is downloaded over the ServoWire network.  Installations are fast and reliable. Simple cabling supports up to sixteen drives per network.

Standard Motor Interface

S2D drives interface to a nearly unlimited range of motors including AC brushless, rotary, linear and high poll count motors. Quadrature encoders with hall track information, serial encoders or resolvers are supported. The drives provide smooth output torque by using three-phase sinusoidal commutation.  Quadrature, Serial, Resolver, Yaskawa Sigma I & II, Endat 2.1, and Tamagawa TS56 motor feedback types are available. Integrated Drive I/O

Integrating high speed I/O at the drive level provides flexibility and tight control over the interaction between motion and external sensors and actuators. External sensors can initiate motion within one servo loop update and capture position with microsecond resolution. Three optically isolated inputs, four optically isolated outputs, one bi-directional I/O point and one each analog input and output  are available. This I/O may be used as general purpose I/O or for a variety of pre-programmed functionality, such as an  E-Stop input, a buffered encoder reference output, a drive ready output, a fail-safe brake output.

IEEE 1394b Interface (OHCI)

S2D drives use a 1394b interface, the third generation in the evolution of this IEEE standard. This high speed network connects the drives to the SMLC controller. Data transfers run at up to 400 MBit using the isochronous channel for time critical information and asynchronous channel for other data. Compatibility with earlier 1394 versions is maintained.

Critical timing functionality with no latency is provided for:

  • Mark width discrimination
  • Position delay triggers
  • Timing advance registration
  • Backup compensation
  • Many other applications that require extremely fast, deterministic timing and synchronization

Safety & Maintainability

To aid in the design of safe machinery, safety circuit options are available that support EN 13849-1 standards. A method is available to place the drive in a safe mode without the need for additional external components to power down the drive. This is supported with:

  • Standard safety interlocks
  • Extensive alarm detection
  • Reporting over the ServoWire network
  • Safe Torque Off (STO) and additional safety options

Auxiliary Feedback

An optional interface for auxiliary feedback is available. It can be used as a pacer or for distributed feedback.
